Woman shares grim ‘paper towel test’ which shows how clean your hotel room really is

A woman has gone viral on social media after sharing a ‘paper towel test’ online that can reveal how dirty your hotel room really is – even when it looks freshly cleaned

One of the perks of travelling and staying in a hotel is that you can relax and unwind in a space that has been cleaned ahead of your arrival and will be cleaned up after you as you leave.

So you can kick your shoes off and enjoy yourself in your freshly cleaned room… or so you might think.

A social media user has caused a stir on TikTok after showing that some hotel rooms might not be as clean as they first appear.

Alyssa, who posts on the video-sharing platform as @alyssascleaningcompany, shared a look at her ‘paper towel test’ on the floor of her hotel room’s bathroom.

In the clip, she can be seen taking a paper towel, spraying it with some water and wiping the tiled floor around the toilet.

The floor appears to have been cleaned before she got there, but when she holds the paper towel up to the camera, viewers can see it is actually filthy.

“First thing I did when I got to the hotel room was the paper towel test,” the cleaning guru from the US says.

“This is why I have trust issues

“Can’t trust anybody or anything.”

Alyssa’s video has since been liked over 25,000 times and garnered hundreds of comments from horrified cleaning fans.

One person said: “That’s why I never walk barefoot at a hotel.”

Another replied: “Great! Now I have to add cleaning spray in my suitcase. You triggered my trust issues!”

A third added: “People saying this is acceptable is crazy. A clean floor is not ‘deep cleaning’. They need to hire more staff and give them more time to clean.”

However, some urged people to be kinder to hotel cleaning staff, who didn’t get a lot of time to complete each task.

A different user, who claims to have worked in a hotel, posted: “I used to work in a hotel. We wanted everything to be perfect but they only gave us 30 mins to clean and a lot of rooms.”
